Over the last 10 years

What it is

The risk premium is the extra yield Spain pays to borrow for 10 years compared with Germany, the euro area's safe benchmark. It is measured in basis points: 100 bp is one percentage point.

How to read it

A low premium means investors see little risk in Spanish debt; a fast rise signals stress. The colour compares today's level with the last 10 years: "Good" is a low premium for what is usual. It uses the Spanish bond from the Bank of Spain and the ECB's top-rated euro-area bond.

Frequently asked questions

What is the risk premium?

The gap between the yield on Spain's 10-year bond and the German or top-rated euro-area benchmark. It shows how much more Spain pays to borrow.

What counts as a high risk premium?

It depends on the period. That is why it is compared here with the last 10 years: the page shows its high and low over that period and where today stands.

Why does it matter for the economy?

A higher premium makes borrowing dearer for the state and often for Spanish banks and companies.
