Over the last 10 years
- Days in each colour: "Good" 31%, "Fair" 43%, "Poor" 27%.
What it is
The traffic light sums up in one colour how the US stock market stands today against its own history of the last 10 years. It combines three themes: the price trend, nervousness (volatility) and companies' access to credit.
How to read it
"Good" means the whole sits in the healthiest third of its recent history; "Poor", in the most strained third. To change colour, health must cross the cut-off by a margin, which filters out noise. It describes the present and does not anticipate rises or falls.
Frequently asked questions
What does the market traffic light measure?
How the US stock market stands today against its own 10-year history, combining price trend, volatility and access to credit.
Does it predict whether stocks will rise or fall?
No. It describes the present. In the past, "Poor" periods were followed by much larger moves, both down and up: the worst moments are often followed by rebounds.
How often is it updated?
Every market day, after the Wall Street close, with the data published by then.
